To continue Oma’s legacy, Jason has been working with a film crew to make a documentary about their family’s journey. “I have really cherished that.” Everybody’s Oma “Oma’s death was obviously very sad, but it was also beautiful in a way to see people in a hospital setting work together and give families the space and comfort they need,” he said. “The thing I had to get around at first was that this might be painful and hurtful for me, but for her - she just finds comfort in what she sees me as.”Īlthough devastated by his mum’s passing, Jason said it was heartwarming to see the support Oma received in her final days. “To my mum, was I her son, her husband, her father? And in a way, I became all three of those characters in her mind. “I just had to say to myself ‘OK, how do I make myself relevant to her, how do I make that fit?’ “I knew it was coming, but just getting to that moment it was like, ‘OK, this is where we’re at now.’ “With Oma towards the end, it was only a matter of weeks ago, she didn’t recognise me any more,” he said. Jason has spoken of his family’s “crushing sorrow” since her death, and of the struggles he experienced in her final weeks.
